Growing grapes is a relatively simple task for the home grower since they will grow in a variety of soils and can be trained onto a fascinating assortment of apparatus, ranging from arbors to architectural facades to trellis systems used by grape farmers. In many applications the ever-changing appearance of the vines and fruit provides a unique addition to the landscape. Grapes are known to last more than 100 years if a minimum of care is given to them and they have been provided with a viable place to grow. Once established, care consists entirely of annual pruning, picking the fruit and dealing with Japanese Beetles in most cases. Fortunately the beetles don't last long so the best thing is generally to ignore them unless they are very bad. In late summer, your plants will be filling with tasty, chemical-free fruit. CANADICE is a hardy red with sweet fruit ripening about 2 weeks before Concord (Early season) and preferring cool weather. Fruit forms large, tight clusters. Vines are very hardy, reliable and productive. RELIANCE is an exciting new early-season red variety which has superior disease resistance, hardiness and excellent flavored, medium-sized fruit in large clusters. This new release promises to be one of the outstanding seedless varieties but must be tested. HIMROD the hardiest, seedless white variety is one of the best for eating with long, loose clusters of medium size fruit which may be dried as raisins. Early season. CONCORD is a seedless variant (sport) of the legendary Concord, which composes the majority of all grape plantings because of its reliability under widely varying conditions and tasty blue fruit. This Mid-season variety has a long ripening time and most characteristics of the original have been strengthened along with hardiness and productivity. With cranberries & blueberries, Concord is one of the 3 native american fruit crops.
MUSCADINES Muscadine varieties (Vitis rotundifolia) are native, Southern varieties of grapes long-favored by many. They prefer well-drained soil, and have very shallow root systems (8") and must not be planted too deep. Zones 7-9. Unlike our other table grapes, these have seeds but the taste is somewhat legendary among aficionados. Also, easy to grow without the use of chemicals. We offer three outstanding self-pollinating varieties. CARLOS yields huge, golden-bronze grapes often more than an inch in diameter, very delicious. A favorite for grape juice and jelly. COWART is vigorous & productive with large black fruit & clusters. This disease resistant variety used in jams and jellies. MAGNOLIA is a late season, vigorous vine and self-fertile.
