Native Plants

We grow several varieties of fruiting plants which are native to the eastern US.   Many of these are specified in landscape projects and are excellent choices for bird gardens, for landscape areas designed to increase food and shelter for wildlife, or to establish native plants.  Formosa carpet, the outstanding raspberry groundcover, is a native to the Pacific Northwest where it was identified and taken from the wild by the University of British Columbia.  This plant, like the Wells' Delight groundcover blueberry which was identified and developed by North Carolina State University, is unique.

All of these plants have undergone a process of being identified as useful wild specimens and then developed as nursery plants and put into wide use in the eastern United States.  In each case we have worked to identify outstanding source material and have continued to select and improve these varieties.

In some cases, such as serviceberry, there are few identified varieties to select from.  In the cases of the Highbush Blueberry or the American Cranberry there are literally thousands of varieties which have been developed, of which only a handful are in wide use.  We are the largest container grower of both of these blueberries and cranberries, with about two dozen varieties of blueberries to offer.

In the case of Lowbush Blueberries there has not been a process of development of known varieties and plants which are sold are normally simply wild plants which have been gathered or propagated.and

We believe you will find our selection of muscadine grapes excellent.  These hardy, southern natives have long been popular among those who were familiar with their excellent fruit qualities.

It is our practice to take these useful native plants and put them into commercial production using our normal methods rather than to gather them from the wild and resell them since we believe this practice is very harmful to our natural environment.
